On Thursday, March 28, the Miami-Dade Chapter of EWRI hosted a presentation titled “Green Infrastructure in the Face of Rising Tides” at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. In his presentation, which was approved for 1 PDH credit, Patrick Shearer, P.E. shared a menu of green infrastructure design options and their respective benefits. Patrick focused on designs that work under local and regional conditions by providing existing examples throughout Miami-Dade County. The event included a question-and-answer session with the presenter and allowed opportunities for networking and one-on-one discussion before and after the presentation.
The event was organized by the EWRI Board with support from members of the ASCE Miami-Dade Board, including Vice President Carlos Tijerino. Generous sponsorship was provided by E Sciences Inc. Multiple ASCE members were in attendance, including ASCE Miami-Dade Branch leadership and the entire EWRI Miami-Dade Chapter Board. The 34 registrants were comprised of five sponsor invitees, 15 ASCE members, eight non-members, and six students across engineering, science, landscape architecture, construction management and academia, among other professions. The diversity of attendee backgrounds yielded a more well rounded and fruitful discussion for those present.
Beyond the fact that the event was well-attended, the most notable metric of its success is the fact that several attendees flew from out-of-state specifically for the presentation, confirming that the topic was well-selected and that the event was industry-leading not just locally but nationally.
