Using interactive
software developed by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the
Miami-Dade ASCE Branch’s bridge design contest challenged contestants
to design a virtual bridge able to withstand a standard truck load by
balancing real-world design variables such as: material selection,
truss type, abutment type, and site work cost; just to name a few. The
lowest cost design able to support the design loading was the winner.
The top four division winners won cash prizes, and the first place
winners became eligible to compete in the state competition in Orlando
on August 21, 2009 for additional cash prizes.
A big "THANK YOU"
goes out to our sponsors, who provided us with the opportunity to host
this contest and present to students a direct and simple illustration
of how science and mathematics are actually applied in our day-to-day
life:
Florida Section ASCE,
ASCE Broward Branch, Malcolm Pirnie, CDM, C3TS, Bermello Ajamil &
Partners, Giralt Enterprises, Manso-Rivero Family, and CH2M Hill.
We had a great
turn out to support the event, as well as great participation from the
local middle and high schools. We look forward to seeing you all
again next year! If you would like information on next year's 2010
local and state competitions, please contact
